The Te Reo Maori Podcast: A New Way to Experience Language and Culture
There is a growing sense of urgency among people to preserve the rich languages and cultures of our world. It’s no longer just about “old country” nostalgia or preserving our heritages for future generations. Today, we see the value in retaining a language not only because it reflects who we are as individuals but also because it can be used as a tool for positive change. The Te Reo Maori Podcast is here to help you tap into that power. As an audio-first medium, the Te Reo Maori Podcast will enable listeners to experience the richness of Maori language and culture in a way that books, films or even traditional conversational learning methods cannot.
What is Te Reo Maori?
Māori is a language spoken by the indigenous people of New Zealand. It’s a language rich in cultural and linguistic heritage that has been spoken in the country for over 1,000 years. Te Reo Maori is the study and preservation of this language. It is the use of Māori to express ideas, convey meaning and carry out everyday functions. It is a language with a rich and evolving history, and it is something that is currently in danger of becoming extinct.
The Te Reo Maori Podcast: An English-language Podcast for New Zealanders
The Te Reo Maori Podcast is a new audio series produced by The New Zealand Herald in collaboration with Auckland-based production company, Arise Content, and the Māori Language Commission. The series is a bilingual English-language audio series that aims to provide a bridge between Māori and English speaking New Zealanders. With the increasing number of bilingual New Zealanders, the Māori-language population is also growing, but the language is not equally accessible to all. The series offers an accessible, non-judgemental, bilingual platform to share the language, culture and heritage of New Zealanders.
The Te Reo Maori Podcast: A New Way to Experience Language and Culture for Everyone Else
To truly grow and prosper, each language must be shared with new audiences. So for the Te Reo Maori Podcast we’ve also developed a non-Māori-language version that’s available online and in iTunes. This non-Māori version of the Te Reo Maori Podcast is designed for everyone else. It’s the same language, but now it’s played through a new set of ears: yours. By immersing yourself in the language, you’ll be able to hear the subtle nuances and meanings of the language much more clearly, as well as experience the power of the Maori language through a new set of eyes.
What’s Next for the Te Reo Maori Podcast?
Now that we’ve got the first season of the Te Reo Maori Podcast out there in the world, we’ve got a few ideas on how to take it further. Now that you’ve experienced the language, we want to see what your take is. We’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback on what we’re doing with the podcast. Thanks for reading and listening to the Te Reo Maori Podcast. We look forward to bringing more of the language and culture of New Zealand to the world together.
